What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization is making a site legible to systems that read pages and generate an answer from them, rather than to systems that rank pages and show a list of links.

The thing that changed

A search engine finds ten pages and shows you ten links. A generative engine finds ten pages, reads them, and writes you a paragraph. In the second case there is no position to be in: either your words are in the answer or they are not, and if they are, you may or may not be named beside them.

That is the whole of the shift. Everything called GEO follows from it, and most of what is sold as GEO is either an old technique with a new name or a guess dressed as a method.

What actually changes on a page

The words have to be in the HTML. This is the largest single cause of a site being absent from generated answers and it has nothing to do with writing: a page that builds itself in the browser arrives at most of these systems as an empty shell, because they read what the server sent and do not run the JavaScript.

The page has to answer, in a sentence, near the top. A model assembling a paragraph takes passages that stand on their own. A page whose answer only emerges across four paragraphs of context has nothing that can be lifted.

The page has to say who it is and when it was written. A generated answer is a claim its author has to stand behind, and the systems making them prefer text that is attributable and dated over text that is neither.

And the machine-readable layer has to agree with the visible one. Structured data saying one thing while the page says another does not confuse a person, who never sees it, but it is exactly the sort of contradiction that makes a system discard a source.

How it differs from SEO, honestly

Less than the name implies. A page that is fast, readable without JavaScript, honestly titled, well structured and marked up correctly does well at both, because both are reading the same bytes.

The differences that are real are ones of emphasis. Rankings reward a page that is comprehensive; generated answers reward a page that is quotable. Rankings tolerate an answer buried in the middle; generated answers do not. Rankings are a competition for a position; generated answers are a competition to be the passage that gets used.

Anybody offering to get you into AI answers by a mechanism they will not name is selling you something. There is no submission process and no ranking factor to buy.

What cannot be promised

How often you appear, and in whose answer. There is no ranking report for generated answers, no position to track, and no tool that can see inside somebody else's model. Anybody quoting you a number for this is quoting you a number they made up.

What can be checked is whether your pages are readable, quotable, attributable and consistent — the conditions for being used. That is the part an audit can measure, and it is the part that is actually in your control.
